A fire incident at New York’s JFK Airport on Wednesday morning resulted in nine injuries and significant disruptions to flight schedules, including dozens of cancellations and delays. The incident in Terminal 8 led to the evacuation of approximately 960 individuals due to smoke emanating from an escalator fire in Concourse C.
The fire was reported around 7:15 a.m., prompting immediate action from emergency services. The New York Fire Department swiftly responded to the scene, where smoke had spread throughout the terminal, affecting visibility and air quality. Nine individuals suffered from minor smoke inhalation, with four requiring hospitalization for further medical evaluation.
As a precaution and to facilitate emergency operations, nearly a thousand passengers and staff were moved to a safer section of the terminal. The fire department has since thoroughly examined the terminal, which is currently undergoing ventilation to clear the smoke.
Terminal 8, primarily used by American Airlines, experienced substantial flight disruptions. According to the latest updates, American Airlines has canceled 69 flights and delayed 332 others, impacting about 9% of its daily operations.
