How Close Are We To World War 3?

Contents

China

The greatest threat to geopolitical stability has long been the tension between China and the US, particularly over Taiwan’s sovereignty. Beijing views Taiwan as an integral part of its territory and has adopted an increasingly aggressive stance towards the island. Meanwhile, the US has ramped up its support for Taiwan’s independence, both financially and militarily.

Earlier this year, the top US military commander in the Indo-Pacific warned that Beijing aims to be able to invade Taiwan by 2027. This timeline aligns with the centenary of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), fueling concerns that China could launch a significant military operation. The prospect of such an invasion would be catastrophic for human costs and the global economy, potentially triggering a second Great Depression.

Middle East

Tensions in the Middle East are also on the rise. There is growing concern about an all-out war between Hezbollah in Lebanon and Israel. The two sides have engaged in exchanges of drones, rockets, and missiles, with northern Israel facing significant depopulation. Hezbollah’s mission is to force Israel into a ceasefire in Gaza, but there is little optimism that a diplomatic solution will be reached before intense conflict ensues.

Global leaders are engaged in intensive diplomacy to dissuade Israel from escalating attacks on Lebanon, fearing that a wider regional war could erupt. Any conflict between Lebanon and Israel would likely draw Iran into the fray, given its support for Hezbollah. This, in turn, could bring the US directly into the conflict, escalating it into a broader regional war.

North Korea

Since talks with former US President Donald Trump broke down in 2019, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has focused on modernizing his nuclear and missile arsenals. In a recent address, he warned that US actions have pushed the Korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war. North Korea has abandoned its goal of reconciling with South Korea, and tensions between the two nations are rising.

Recent developments include a “balloon war” between North and South Korea, with each side sending propaganda and waste-filled balloons across the border. The South has scrapped a 2018 non-hostility pact, further escalating tensions. The US has also become more involved, conducting military drills with South Korea as a warning to North Korea.

Final Thoughts

The increasing global tensions and alliances among authoritarian states pose significant risks for future conflicts. While the possibility of World War Three remains uncertain, the need for military preparedness and diplomatic efforts is more critical than ever. The world must navigate these difficult waters cautiously, striving to prevent another devastating global conflict outbreak.
