Joe Biden Grants ‘Full and Unconditional’ Pardon To His Son Hunter

President Joe Biden’s recent decision to issue a full pardon for his son Hunter Biden has ignited widespread debate, drawing both criticism and support from across the political spectrum. This unprecedented move not only wipes Hunter’s record clean of federal charges related to gun possession and tax evasion but also raises important questions about justice, fairness, and presidential authority.

The Background: Charges Against Hunter Biden

Hunter Biden faced significant legal challenges in two separate cases:

  1. Federal Gun Case: In 2018, Hunter was accused of lying on a federal form about his drug use when purchasing a handgun. The charges stemmed from his admitted addiction to crack cocaine during that time. Prosecutors detailed that the gun, purchased at a Delaware store, was later disposed of in a trash bin by Hunter’s then-girlfriend, Hallie Biden. A jury convicted him on three charges, which could have resulted in up to 25 years in prison.
  2. Tax Evasion: Hunter was also charged with evading $1.4 million in income taxes from 2016 to 2019. Federal investigators revealed that he earned $7 million from foreign business deals during this period but spent $5 million on personal indulgences like luxury hotels, escorts, and expensive cars. Initially pleading not guilty, he later changed his plea and accepted all nine charges, including felony tax offenses.

The combined convictions carried the potential for significant prison time, making President Biden’s intervention both impactful and controversial.

White House Defense: “Two Things Can Be True”

In a series of press briefings, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre addressed the pardon, emphasizing President Biden’s belief that his son was unfairly targeted for political reasons. She acknowledged that the decision was not easy for the president, who “wrestled” with it over the weekend before ultimately deciding that “enough is enough.”

Jean-Pierre reiterated the president’s stance that Hunter’s prosecution was politically motivated, echoing comments from former Attorney General Eric Holder, who claimed, “No US attorney would have charged this case given the underlying facts.” Holder argued that if Hunter were an ordinary citizen, the charges would likely have been dismissed entirely.

Despite the pardon, Jean-Pierre maintained that President Biden still believes in the integrity of the justice system. “Two things can be true,” she stated, defending the administration’s actions while acknowledging the political sensitivities surrounding the case.

Reactions from Both Sides

Democratic Responses

The decision has divided Democrats. While some supported the pardon, others expressed disappointment:

  • Representative Greg Stanton of Arizona criticized the move, stating, “This wasn’t a politically motivated prosecution. Hunter committed felonies and was convicted by a jury of his peers.”
  • Governor Jared Polis of Colorado empathized with Biden as a father but warned that the decision sets a dangerous precedent, tarnishing the president’s reputation.
  • Representative Greg Landsman of Ohio noted the decision as a “setback” for restoring faith in public service.
