Los Angeles Fire Chief Removed Following Devastating Wildfires

Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley has been removed from her position following her department’s response to the catastrophic Palisades and Eaton wildfires. The fires, which killed dozens and destroyed hundreds of homes, have led to widespread criticism of the city’s emergency preparedness.

Mayor Karen Bass announced Crowley’s removal on Friday, citing serious crisis management failures. The decision comes after reports that over 1,000 firefighters were sent home on the morning the fires broke out instead of being deployed to contain the disaster.

Firefighter Deployment Failures

One of the major reasons behind Crowley’s firing was the decision to send home 1,000 firefighters who could have helped contain the wildfires. Mayor Bass emphasized that this failure significantly worsened the situation and contributed to the fires spreading out of control.

In a statement, Bass said:

“We know that 1,000 firefighters that could have been on duty on the morning the fires broke out were instead sent home on Chief Crowley’s watch.”

Refusal to Conduct an After-Action Report

Following the disaster, the President of the Fire Commission requested Crowley to conduct an after-action report to analyze the department’s response. However, Crowley refused, further fueling concerns about her leadership. This refusal was another key factor in her removal.

Bass Was in Ghana During the Wildfires

As criticism mounts over the city’s wildfire response, Mayor Bass has also come under fire for her absence during the crisis. She attended an event in Ghana on January 7 despite weather warnings that severe wildfire conditions were imminent.

A representative for Bass stated that the mayor’s office typically receives emergency alerts from the fire department, but no such warning was given before these fires erupted. However, critics argue that Bass should have been more proactive in assessing the severity of the situation.
