7 Magnitude Earthquake Devastates Thailand and Burma, Over 150 Dead

Eyewitnesses Describe the Panic

Chaos unfolded inside shopping malls, office towers, and residential buildings as the quake struck. In Bangkok’s city center, Fraser Morton, a tourist from Scotland, recalled being inside a mall when the ground began to tremble.

“I just started walking calmly at first but then the building started really moving,” he said. “A lot of screaming, a lot of panic, people running the wrong way down the escalators, lots of banging and crashing.”

Others, like local resident April Kanichawanakul, mistook the initial quake for dizziness until the building began to sway violently.

Hospitals across Bangkok evacuated patients to outdoor areas, while firefighters and medics scrambled to respond to emergencies.

Widespread Structural Damage

The earthquake left behind visible signs of devastation across urban and rural areas alike. In Bangkok, videos showed water cascading from rooftop pools, debris falling from glass buildings, and windows shattering. The greater Bangkok metropolitan area, home to over 17 million people, saw mass evacuations, road closures, and public transport disruptions.

Burma’s already fragile infrastructure suffered even more extensive damage. Highways buckled, religious monuments collapsed, and entire neighborhoods were left without power or communication.

Emergency Response Underway

Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra held an emergency meeting early Friday morning to assess the quake’s damage and mobilize aid. Authorities officially declared Bangkok a disaster zone, enabling cross-agency coordination for search and rescue operations.

Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai confirmed that 90 people are still unaccounted for in the wake of the building collapse, with hopes pinned on search teams working through the rubble.

In Burma, emergency responders faced difficulties reaching certain areas due to collapsed roads and damaged bridges. Aid organizations have begun deploying supplies, but the situation remains volatile as aftershocks continue to strike.

Viral Coverage and Public Reaction

The quake’s sudden and violent nature was captured from nearly every angle — from dashcam videos of crumbling buildings to shaky phone footage of panicked citizens fleeing malls and office towers.

On Twitter, hashtags like #BangkokEarthquake and #BurmaQuake trended globally, with real-time footage giving the world a glimpse into the horror and chaos as it unfolded.

Looking Ahead: Rising Concerns

With hundreds still missing and rescue efforts racing against time, the death toll is expected to rise. Emergency teams across both countries remain on high alert as new tremors threaten already weakened structures.

Geological experts are closely monitoring the situation, warning that the shallow depth and location of the quake make further tremors highly likely. While the full scale of destruction is still being assessed, the region is bracing for a long and painful recovery.
