The Warren Commission and Lingering Doubts
Following Kennedy’s assassination, President Lyndon B. Johnson created the Warren Commission to investigate the crime. The commission concluded that Oswald acted alone. However, skepticism about this finding has persisted for decades. Polls consistently show that many Americans believe Kennedy’s death was part of a broader conspiracy.
The newly released files include several documents related to the Warren Commission, but there is no indication that they fundamentally alter its conclusions.
Trump’s Push for ‘Maximum Transparency’
The release of these documents aligns with Trump’s broader promise to increase transparency within U.S. intelligence agencies. Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s Director of National Intelligence, praised the move, saying it was a crucial step toward restoring public trust in federal institutions.
However, some intelligence officials have argued that the secrecy surrounding certain records was necessary to protect national security. The National Archives confirmed that while most files are now available, some information remains withheld under legal protections, including court orders and tax return laws.
Missing Files and Continued Frustration
Despite the release, a significant portion of JFK-related documents remains undisclosed. According to JFK researcher Jefferson Morley, only about a third of the previously redacted files are now fully available. This means that two-thirds of the anticipated records are still missing, including over 500 IRS files and 2,400 recently discovered FBI documents.
“These long-secret records shed new light on JFK’s mistrust of the CIA, the Castro assassination plots, and the surveillance of Oswald in Mexico City,” Morley said. “But the full story is still out of reach.”
A Last-Minute Rush to Meet Trump’s Deadline
Reports suggest that Trump’s order to release the files triggered a last-minute scramble within the Justice Department. Internal emails indicate that officials were racing against the clock to review and approve the documents for declassification.
ABC News reported that the DOJ’s National Security Division was suddenly instructed to conduct a second, urgent review of the documents—even though the FBI had already completed an initial declassification assessment.
Newly Discovered FBI Files
Adding another layer of intrigue, the FBI recently announced that it had uncovered 2,400 additional records linked to Kennedy’s assassination. These files are now being transferred to the National Archives, though it remains unclear whether they contain any new information.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a member of Trump’s administration, has publicly called for the release of all remaining records, suggesting that they could shed light on possible government involvement or a cover-up. However, multiple government investigations have found no evidence of U.S. complicity in Kennedy’s murder.
Why Were JFK Files Withheld for So Long?
A 1992 federal law required the full release of all JFK assassination records by October 26, 2017. However, when the deadline arrived, then-President Trump ordered the release of nearly 2,900 records but allowed others to remain classified due to CIA and FBI concerns about national security.
Presidents Biden and Trump both delayed the full release multiple times. The documents made public in 2017 included details on the FBI’s and CIA’s investigations into Oswald, as well as Cold War-era intelligence operations.
Final Thoughts
While the release of these files marks a significant step in government transparency, the fact that so many documents remain classified means the full story behind Kennedy’s assassination is still incomplete. Historians and researchers will continue to analyze the new materials, hoping to piece together more details of one of America’s most enduring mysteries.
For now, the debate over what really happened on November 22, 1963, is far from over.
