Hate Your Spotify Wrapped? You’re Not Alone

Speculated Causes: Layoffs and AI

Many users pointed to Spotify’s recent mass layoffs as a possible reason for Wrapped’s lackluster execution. In December 2023, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek announced layoffs affecting 17% of the company’s workforce—approximately 1,500 employees.

On social media, users speculated that these staffing changes impacted the team behind Spotify Wrapped. One user commented, “The layoffs really show here. Wrapped is a bit… underwhelming this year. Less unconventional data viz moments like in previous years (like the city matches, zodiac signs, etc). It was all very obvious.”

Others theorized that artificial intelligence might have played a role in producing this year’s Wrapped. Several users noted that the lack of creativity and effort suggested overreliance on AI.

  • “Spotify Wrapped is underwhelming and reeks of AI… there seems to be a real lack of effort this year,” wrote one user.
  • Another remarked, “If the lack of fun facts in Spotify Wrapped this year taught us anything, it’s that the world needs less AI and more chronically online data analysts with a sense of humor.”

Spotify’s Response

Despite the backlash, Spotify maintained that Wrapped is still a significant effort involving many team members. On its website, Spotify described the feature as “a massive effort showcasing the hard work and creativity of hundreds of Spotify team members each year.”

Spotify also clarified that some fan-favorite features like “Sound Town” and Audio Aura were intended as one-off inclusions in previous years.

What This Means for Spotify

Spotify Wrapped has long been a cornerstone of the platform’s appeal. It’s not just a feature—it’s an experience that helps users feel connected to their listening habits and to the streaming service itself. However, the 2024 Wrapped debacle highlights the risks of failing to innovate and prioritize user satisfaction.

As competitors like Apple Music and Tidal continue to offer alternative streaming experiences, Spotify may need to reflect on what made Wrapped so successful in the first place: creativity, personalization, and a sense of fun. Without these elements, Wrapped risks losing its magic—and Spotify risks losing its edge in an increasingly competitive market.
