Teen Achieves 200-Pound Weight Loss Alone, Reveals Top Strategy

Nicolas Garratt’s journey from 400 pounds to an aspiring fitness influencer is a remarkable tale of determination and transformation. By the age of 15, Nicolas weighed 400 pounds, a reality that caused him immense distress and led to him being bullied at school. The COVID-19 lockdowns, which began in 2020, temporarily escaped this harsh reality. Nicolas, now 19, recalls feeling relieved that he could avoid seeing people during the pandemic, preferring the solitude of staying indoors and only venturing out under the cover of darkness.

Nicolas’s struggles with weight began early in his childhood. By the age of five, he had started to gain significant weight, and as the years passed, his situation worsened. Bullying at school further damaged his self-esteem, leading him to avoid attending and eventually dropping out. He turned to food as a coping mechanism, consuming between 4,000 to 6,000 calories daily. His diet consisted of hamburgers, pork pies, ice cream, and unconventional combinations like bacon, Nutella, and melted cheese sandwiches. By May 2020, Nicolas had reached his heaviest weight, and the physical toll on his body was immense; he struggled with severe back pain and could barely walk around the block.

The turning point for Nicolas came when a doctor warned him about his severe health risks, including the likelihood of a heart attack. This wake-up call, coupled with sleepless nights filled with anxiety about his future, spurred him into action. Initially, Nicolas adopted extreme fasting to lose weight, shedding about 140 pounds. However, this approach left him feeling dissatisfied and unhealthy, as he had not gained muscle and still struggled with his self-image. This dissatisfaction led to a brief relapse into unhealthy eating and drinking habits, resulting in a 50-pound weight gain.
